Rome Fiumicino ATC Simulator
LIRF / FCO — Italy
Rome Fiumicino (LIRF / FCO) is one of the real-world terminal areas you can control in the free ATC Radar Simulator. Its approach (APP) airspace — centred near 41°48.3'N 12°15.1'E in Italy — is modelled with real runways, radio navaids and instrument procedures. As the approach controller you sequence arriving traffic onto the ILS approach, launch departures on their standard instrument departures, and keep every flight safely separated on the radar.
Rome Fiumicino “Leonardo da Vinci” is Italy’s busiest airport and the hub of ITA Airways, on the coast about 30 km west of Rome. It has two long parallel runways, 16L/34R and 16R/34L, and the cross runway 07/25, with an ILS on every runway end except 07, and the Ostia VOR (OST) sits right on the field.
Rome’s arrivals follow published routes from the Tarquinia (TAQ), Campagnano (CMP) and Latina (LAT) VORs and from VALMA, ESINO and RIFFI out over the sea, ending at the RATIR and NETUN holds or the Roma VOR (ROM) before vectoring onto the ILS; departures leave towards GILIO, GISPA, ESINO, PEPIX, RIFFI, ROTUN, TIBER, SIPRO and OKUNO. Ciampino, Rome’s second airport, lies under the same terminal area south-east of the city.

Runways 25, 16L, 34R, 16R, 34L are equipped with an ILS (Instrument Landing System) — a localizer for lateral guidance and a glideslope for the descent path down to the threshold. In the simulator you turn arrivals onto the extended centreline, clear them for the approach, and watch them capture the localizer and glideslope automatically.

The terminal airspace
- Field elevation: 15 ft above sea level.
- Transition level: FL70 — below it aircraft fly altitudes on the local QNH; at or above it they fly standard flight levels.
- Upper limit: FL195 — overflights cross the sector below this level.
- The terminal control area (TMA) extends roughly 73 NM around the field.

How to control Rome Fiumicino in the simulator
Rome is a big-airport challenge on real procedures: arrivals off the TAQ, CMP and LAT VORs and in from the sea feed two holds, RATIR and NETUN, and you sequence them onto the parallel ILS runways 16L/16R or 34L/34R — or 25 when the wind turns. Overflights cross at the top of your airspace, and Ciampino’s traffic is not modelled, so the sky is Fiumicino’s alone.
Pick Rome Fiumicino when you start a session, then double-click an aircraft's data block to assume it. Give it radar headings, climb or descend it to a level and control its speed to build an orderly stream toward the runway. Turn arrivals onto final, clear them for the ILS, and keep at least 3 NM and 1,000 ft between aircraft — the short-term conflict alert (STCA) warns you before a loss of separation. New to it? Read the guide to approach radar control and the ATC glossary first.
